I just watched the excellent Pirates of Silicon Valley, and I’m just about to watch it again… For those who don’t know, it’s a high quality made-for-TV movie about Steve Jobs, Woz and the other Apple guys in the early days, and their fight with Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Steve “Ballistic” Ballmer of Microsoft.
It’s seriously good, even if you’re only vaguely interested in how it all began. Noah Wyle does an awesome Jobs: a bit of a hippie, with the ability to inspire and terrify those around him, often simultaneously. There’s plenty of that Jobsian unpredictability and irrationality that we’ve come to love, too. Gates is portrayed in a surprisingly poor light (not that he doesn’t deserve it, if you ask me), with Anthony Michael Hall’s character often seemly creepy and frankly evil.
Anyway… Quality little film. I had to buy it on import, though, so it’s looking like I might have to patch my firmware if I want to watch it much. That’s a question for another day, though.
So, seems the Grand Opening of the Trafford centre Apple Store is set for Saturday 19th. Anyone else going? I’ve got to decide whether to go queue overnight or not…
This is kind of old news, but I’ve been listening to some music and it totally reminded me of a great night I had at Fibbers the other week. Fibbers is pretty much the spiritual home of live music in York (although the people at the Stone Roses bar might take issue with that, among others), and they’ve had some pretty big names play there. It feels like a bit of a dive, although it’s nothing as bad as Blue Note in Derby – but that’s another story. Don’t get me started.
Anyway, saw the Five O’Clock Heroes there, and they played a pretty damn good set. Half British and half American, you can feel the influences from both sides of the pond in their music… My favourite style of guitar-driven indie rock, totally recommend them. They’ve got a single on iTunes (in the UK, anyway) and their latest is dues out 14th November. It’s called White Girls, if memory serves. Check it out!
Apologies for the downtime recently. Bit of a security blunder. Hopefully it’s all sorted out. As a consequence, file uploads are suspended at the moment. Sorry for the inconvenience, blame idiots with nothing better to do.
